Musicivic Baroque

Founded in 2019, Musicivic Baroque is the resident Baroque ensemble for Musicivic Inc., a nonprofit based in Ambler, Pennsylvania with the mission to help build and provide support services for chamber music series and residencies around the country. Musicivic Baroque’s performs repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries and plays on period instruments. The founding members include Natalie Rose Kress, Baroque violin/director, Elena Kauffman, Baroque cello/gamba, and Robert Warner, harpsichord. This season includes their debuts in Washington D.C. at St. Mark’s Church, and New York City at Gotham Early Music Scene’s Midtown Concert series. For more info visit musicivicbaroque.org.

Bios

Natalie Rose Kress, Baroque violin/director:

Praised by the New York Times for her “splendid playing,” Natalie Rose Kress is a violinist, entrepreneur, concertmaster and director based in Washington, D.C.. Following three summers as a Tanglewood Fellow, she was awarded the Jules C. Reiner Violin Prize from the Tanglewood Music Center and performed with Yo-Yo Ma at the Kennedy Center Honors. Recently she was awarded the 2021 Mercury Chamber Orchestra Fellowship and The 2022 English Concert in America Fellowship, as well as performed and recorded the world premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s “Music for String Quartet” at the Linde Center at The Tanglewood Music Center in 2021 with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She performs as a core member of Relic Baroque Orchestra, Quartet Salonnières (NY), Repast Baroque Ensemble (NY), La Grande Bande (MN), and Musicivic Baroque (PA) and can be seen playing with The Handel and Haydn Society (MA), the Washington Bach Consort (D.C.), The English Concert (U.K.), Opera Lafayette (D.C.), The Mercury Chamber Orchestra (TX), Seraphic Fire (FL), TENET Vocal Artists (NY), Early Music NY, and at the Staunton Music Festival (VA). She is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland where she teaches the Early Music Ensemble and is working towards a Doctorate degree in early music pedagogy and period performance. 

Elena Kauffman, Baroque cello/gamba

A Philadelphia native, Elena Kauffman maintains an active career as a performing and teaching artist. She is the cellist and manager of Blue Line Quartet, and she performs frequently with Fairmount String Quartet, Elysium String Quartet, and many other chamber ensembles in the Philadelphia area. She is the principal cellist and personnel manager of the Wayne Oratorio Society and Haverford-Bryn Mawr Chorale Orchestra, and she has performed with the Philadelphia Ballet Orchestra, Reading Symphony, Bay Atlantic Symphony, and West Jersey Chamber Orchestra. 

Praised for her “customary acuity and beauty” (Broad Street Review), Elena has a passion for historical string instruments, and she performs regularly on baroque cello and viola da gamba. She has appeared on tour with Venice Baroque Orchestra, and she was the viola da gamba soloist in New York City Opera’s production of Los Elementos by Antonio Literes. She has participated in the American Bach Soloists Academy in San Francisco, the International Masterclasses Festival in Gaming, Austria, and Juilliard at Piccola Accademia in Montisi, Italy. Elena is a founding member of Filament, and has appeared as a guest with Tempesta di Mare, The Thirteen Chamber Choir Baroque Orchestra, Bach Collegium Philadelphia, Gamut Bach Ensemble, Crescendo Period Instrument Orchestra, Ex Umbris, and Elm City Consort. She has studied with Sarah Cunningham, Phoebe Carrai, and has performed in masterclass for Thomas Fritzsch and Paolo Pandolfo. 

A dedicated educator, Elena maintains a private studio and is the Operations Director of The Common Place Orchestra in Southwest Philadelphia. 

Elena is a graduate of Temple University, where she studied with Jeffrey Solow.

Robert Warner, harpsichord

Native Pennsylvanian Robert Warner began his musical studies on piano and violin at a young age with faculty of Bucknell University. He holds bachelors degrees in music and mathematics from the University of Rochester and became interested in historical performance while exploring the harpsichord and baroque violin at the Eastman School of Music as a college student. Robert then studied harpsichord extensively with Arthur Haas at Stony Brook University, earning masters and doctoral degrees, before being accepted into Juilliard’s Historical Performance program. At Juilliard he continued his studies with Peter Sykes, Richard Egarr and Beatrice Martin and performed under William Christie, Jordi Savall and others, on both harpsichord and baroque viola. Robert now resides in New York City where he continues to be an active performer and teacher. He is the founder, director and harpsichordist of the period-instrument string ensemble New Amsterdam Consort.
